In 2019, 7.1% of adults aged 45 and older wore a hearing aid.[1] Trying a new pair of hearing aids can take a little getting used to. Much like breaking in a new pair of shoes, your hearing aids may not feel or sound completely natural right away. That initial discomfort occurs because your ears and your brain both need time to adjust to the way your new devices deliver sound.
Voices, music and other everyday sounds like your dishwasher may seem unusually sharp, metallic or โtinny.โ While this can be surprising at first, it does not necessarily mean that something is wrong with your hearing aids.
The good news is that your brain is remarkably adaptable. The more consistently you wear your hearing aids, the more opportunities your brain has to learn what these newly amplified sounds should sound like. Try wearing your hearing aids regularly, especially in familiar environments.
When Should You Schedule a Hearing Aid Service Appointment?
A little strangeness during the first few days or weeks is generally not unusual. However, persistent distortion may indicate that your hearing aids need some attention.
A few things that can affect sound quality include incorrect settings, poor placement in or behind the ear, clocked microphones or speakers from built-up wax or debris, moisture collection from sweat, water contact or high humidity.
What Can You Do About Tinny Hearing Aids?
Make sure your hearing aids are positioned correctly and clean them according to the manufacturer’s recommendations. Check the microphone and receiver areas for visible debris, and use your hearing aid cleaning tools as directed.
If the humidity has been high, youโve been doing a lot of sweaty workouts, or you accidentally got your devices wet at the Silver Spring Aquatic Center, then put them in a hearing aid-specific drying system overnight. Avoid exposing them to excessive heat and never use a hair dryer to dry them.
If voices or other sounds continue to be tinny, distorted or uncomfortable despite regular use and proper cleaning, it may be time for a professional adjustment.
At Hearing Center Silver Spring, our hearing specialists can evaluate your devices, check their fit and make programming adjustments when needed. Contact us to schedule your appointment.
