What To Do if Your Hearing Aid Batteries Keep Dying

Nowadays, every object you pick up requires batteries or nightly charging, from your phone and laptop to your headphones and hearing aids.

Approximately 28.8 million U.S. adults could benefit from hearing aids. When your hearing aid batteries start requiring more frequent changing, it’s natural to feel a little frustrated. Let’s take a look at a few steps to take if your hearing aids are dying faster than they should.

1. Check the Battery Expiration Date

While batteries may still work after their expiration date, they likely won’t work as well. Try not to keep too many backup batteries on hand as it increases the risk of expiring before you use them. A month’s worth of backup should be enough for emergencies.

2. Clean Your Battery Compartment

Dust or wax accumulation in the battery compartment can keep your batteries from fully connecting to your hearing aids. Remove the batteries, take a wax pick, hearing aid brush or dry cotton swab, and clean out the compartment before inserting new batteries. Don’t use cleaning agents to clean the compartment unless your hearing aid manual or specialist specifically tells you to do so.

3. Use a Hearing Aid Dryer

Water can damage the internal components of your devices, including the batteries or battery connection spots. If you spend a lot of time at the Silver Spring Recreation and Aquatic Center or it’s been especially humid lately, place your hearing aids in an electric hearing aid dryer or drying jar overnight to pull the moisture out.

4. Check the Charger

If you have rechargeable hearing aids, the charger may be at fault. Try swapping it for a new charger to see if the battery life lasts longer.

5. Schedule a Service and Repair Appointment

If you’ve tried the above tips and your devices are still dying quickly, contact Hearing Center Silver Spring today to schedule a service and repair appointment. We can identify the underlying cause of their poor battery life and find the right solutions, whether a repair, a new charger or a hearing aid upgrade.
