Creating a Winter Hearing Care Routine

Winter is a time to drink some Sweeteria hot chocolate, have a snowball fight and sit by the fire and read. As you embrace all the fun and coziness, take some time to learn a little bit about protecting your hearing aids from damage this season.

Watch Out for Cold Weather

Cold weather can zap your hearing aids’ batteries. Remember not to leave your hearing aids near any windowsills or in your car.

Minimize Moisture

We often associate moisture problems with rain and summer humidity, but winter can be just as harsh on your hearing aids. Snow and ice that collect on hats, gloves and scarves don’t stay frozen for long. Once they melt, that moisture can easily seep into your devices.

Even though many modern hearing aids are water-resistant, it’s still best to prevent repeated exposure to moisture. To stay ahead of winter wear and tear, make it a habit to place your hearing aids in a drying case or dehumidifier as soon as you come indoors.

Prevent Physical Damage

Hearing aids crashing into the ice when you’re skating or getting lost in the snow while sledding put them at risk of breaking. To minimize that risk, secure your devices to your head with a wide headphone or to your shirt with special hearing aid clips. Ensuring that you place your devices in your ears correctly will also help prevent them from falling out while you’re enjoying your favorite winter sports.

Clean Your Hearing Aids Daily

It’s easy to let daily hearing aid care fall to the wayside during the winter. While summer sweat serves as a reminder to clean your devices, winter grime might not be so obvious, but that doesn’t mean it isn’t there.

At the end of every day, wipe your hearing aids with a soft cloth and use the brush and wax tool from their cleaning kit to remove wax and debris.
